"Twelve-year old Ruby Jane Smith of
Columbus has just this week learned she's
being honored by the venerable American
String Teachers Association with an
Alternative Styles Award.

The prestigious award, that puts her front
and center of music acedemia, seeks to
“identify, celebrate and encourage young
practitioners of alternative string styles
such as all folk music traditions, jazz,
fusion and rock music.”

Judges include string luminaries such as
Matt Glasser of the Berklee College of
Music and Grammy and CMA winner Mark
O'Connor. Ruby Jane travels to Detroit in
March to perform at the ASTA national
convention and receive her award."

public school classrooms and beyond.

"People learn in many ways, and one of the great
challenges for educators is to find a way to turn
information into useful knowledge.

When it comes to engaging young minds, perhaps
no other classroom publication has engaged more
eager young minds than Weekly Reader®.
Established in 1902, Weekly Reader Corporation
today publishes 16 magazines and a variety of
supplemental products designed to help teachers
meet standards, reinforce curriculum, and
encourage students to read.
More than nine million students, some 250,000
teachers in grades pre-K through grade 12, and
more than 90 percent of the school districts
nationwide use materials from Weekly Reader
